Lake Creek, flows from South Lake, over Kaaterskill Falls
and divides South Mountain from Prospect Mountain to its west. Sphinx
Rock guards the ridge above route 23A just west of the hairpin turn and parking
area. It has done so since long before any of us went on three, two,
or four legs. The once popular path and the railway tracks no longer pass
anywhere near this frequently photographed spot.
Another Sphinx which appears on
Van Loan's map
of the Mountain House region provides a riddle. It is not clear
what it was. An interesting rock that may be a candidate for that
sphinx is located on the west of the blue trail just south of Puddingstone
Hall. When we find evidence of just what the South Mountain Sphinx
was, we'll post an entry for it.
