Bastion Falls
|
This, the most dramatic roadside waterfall in the
area, has inspired artists and photographers for over one hundred fifty
years. The trail that starts alongside the stream leads to the bottom
of Kaaterskill Falls. On a weekday, when there are few visitors,
you may capture a sense of the sublime that so intrigued the first vacationers
to the region. The original road through Kaaterskill Clove passed far below Bastion Falls which was accessible only by the steep footpath between a the road and Kaaterskill Falls. Immediately below Bastion Falls water cascades over a series of smaller drops that was known as Terrace Falls. |

Today, Route 23A crosses the stream at a hairpin
turn below Terrace Falls. That name has been abandoned in favor of calling
the entire series Bastion Falls. The image above right is a Currier and Ives print. The image to the immediate right is a digital photo taken in September 2004. It might not look familiar because the view from the highway takes in both Bastion and Terrace Falls. |
