Alligator Rock

Alligator Rock Detroit Photo Company Lib. of Congress

Possibly the most photographed rock in the Catskills.  Alligator Rock or the Whale's Mouth looks today as it did throughout the days of the Catskill Mountain House and Hotel Kaaterskill.  Even the teeth, which occasionally loosen and  fall out, seem to always find friendly amateur dentists to keep them in repair.

To find this venerable monument from the Pavilion at the upper South Lake parking lot, walk a short distance past the gate on the path north of the lot. The rock lies to the left of the path. From North Lake, walk from the North Lake beach around the south side of the lake following the old railroad bed and turn left just before the path ends at the isthmus between the lakes.  It is along the path to the South Lake parking lot.
