Welcome to the MTHS website

The Mountain Top Historical Society is dedicated to discovering and preserving the unique and rich history of the Catskill High Peaks. The Society is a not-for-profit organization and maintains a Visitor and Art Trail Center and the Ulster and Delaware train depot (shown above) on its campus in Haines Falls. We are located on scenic Route 23A at the gateway to the Mountain Top and are easily accessible from Exit 20 or 21 of the New York State Thruway.

The Town of Hunter, home to MTHS, is designated a Preserve America Community.

Sept  3  ~ Lightning rods for fire protection installed on roof of MTHS Visitors' Center.

Aug 28   ~ Fire Companies exhibit and talk by Richard Harty are highlights of the Open House.

July 17   ~ The MTHS board reviews draft CAP reports on campus buildings and archives.

July 17   ~ Two new directors named to MTHS board.

July  9   ~ MTHS goes to summer school and summer school comes to us.

 
Upcoming Hikes

September 11 - Hudson River Ramble Hike Two options in legendary Kaaterskill Clove.

 

 

October 2 - Slide, Cornell and Wittenberg (above) A challenging hike in the central Catskills.

 

Also October 2 - Lark in the Park Explore the route along an unused rail bed now planned for a new hiking trail that will extend from the MTHS train station to Laurel House road. Access begins from an old town road, Featherbed Lane. Excursions off the railroad trail to two scenic vistas, Sphinx Rock and the top of Kaaterskill Falls.

FRI. SEPT. 24,  7:30 p.m. U&D Train Station, MTHS Campus. Lecture, Michael Kudish on Poet's Ledge and the Catskill Forest.

SAT. OCT. 23  1:00 p.m. Film premiere of the movie "The Catskill Mountain House and the World Around" at the Doctorow Center, Theater 2, Hunter.   A fascinating peek at the places and  personalities behind the development of the 19th century Catskills' hotels. Interviews with  local  historians, Justine Hommel, John Ham and others.  Wine and cheese reception benefiting the Mountain Top Historical Society to follow.  Tickets $15.
