Hikes 2001
April 22     Huckleberry Point Relatively flat walk leading to views of the Hudson Valley and Platt Clove. Meet St. Francis de Sales church parking lot Rt. 16 near Elka Park 9:00 AM. return 3:30 P.M. Easy.

May 19    Slide Cornell and Wittenberg. Vigorous Hike in the hopefully cooler days of our hiking season. Spectacular views at several stops along the way. Vertical Rise 2500 ft. distance 8 miles. Meet intersection of Rt. 28 and 47 in Big Indian. 8:30 AM. return 6:00 PM. Difficult.

June 2  Mills Mansion and Norrie State Park The 5 mile trail will take us from Mills Mansion along ledges above the Hudson to Norrie State Park.  We will arrange for lunch at The Beekman Arms.  For details of the lunch check back on the Historical Society's web site (www.mths.org).  Vertical rise minimal; an easy hike.  Meet Catskill side of Rip Van Winkle Bridge at parking area near toll booth. 9:00 AM. Return 5:00 PM.

June 16  Circuit of South Mountain. Takes us past some of the more unusual sites in the North Lake area including parts of the 19th century trail system no longer in use. We will try to pinpoint some of these sites. Hikers who own a GPS may want to bring it along to help us record the precise location of these old tourist attractions. Meet Haines Falls Library 9:00. Return 4:00. Easy to Moderate.

July 7     Westkill Mountain.   Spectacular Views of the Catskills from this mountain on the Western Edge of the Devil's Path.  Vertical Rise 1750 ft. Distance 7 miles  Meet Westkill Flagpole on Route 42  9:00 AM Return 5:00 PM Moderate to difficult.

July 21    Huntersfield Mountain and Pratt's Rocks.  In the morning we will climb Huntersfield and enjoy views looking South from this peak on the Northern edge of the Catskills. At noon, we will drive to Pratt's Rocks where we will eat our lunches and climb to the rocks carvings commemorating Zadock Pratt. Meet Ashland Town Hall Parking Lot (on Route 23 Ashland) 9:00 AM Return 3:30 PM Vertical Rise 600 ft. 3 1/2 Miles. Easy to Moderate

August 11  The Trapps to Mohonk Gatehouse. A beautiful walk in the Shawangunks. Excellent views and interesting rock formations. Moderate with rock scramble. Meet Thruway exit 18 New Paltz. 8:30 AM return 5:00.

August 25 - 26   Open House at the Ulster and Delaware Railroad station in Haines Falls Rt. 23A.  Come and see the progress on the restoration of the station.  Watch here for details.

September 1  Hunter Mountain Fire Tower from Spruceton Valley  Meet Westkill Flagpole at 9:00 AM.  We will visit the newly restored fire tower then descend into Stoney Clove.  Difficult because of length of walk (about 6 miles) and steep 2000 ft decent by way of the Becker Hollow trail.  We will need to leave cars at both ends of the trail.  If you are able to meet Larry and Bob in Stoney Clove to leave a car for the shuttle back to Spruceton, call Larry at (518) 734 4264 or Bob at 734-9701.

Sept. 15  Mountain Turnpike We will climb the carriage road that took 19th century visitors to The Catskill Mountain House.  Along the way, we will see the sites of The Rip Van Winkle House and Otis Railway.  Vertical Climb 1500 ft. 6 miles Moderate to difficult.  Meet 9:00 AM at the Roman Catholic Church Parking Lot Rt. 32A in Palenville.

October 6 Hike postponed until Sunday October 7 because of rain
Blackhead to North Lake. A lot of ups and downs as we walk along the Escarpment Trail. Unmatched views of the Hudson Valley and the Classic Northern Catskills. 12 miles - Two main climbs first 2000 ft. to the top of Blackhead  followed by another 900 ft. to Stoppel Point. Difficult.  Meet Maplecrest Post Office 8:30 AM. return 6:00 PM.
