On the left is Fenn's conception of the view of "Catskill Clove" from Indian Head. This is, of course, Kaaterskill Clove, and the Indian Head referred to is one of two protruding cliffs high above the current Route 23A just west of Palenville, NY. The bridge barely visible in the illustration is Moore's Bridge just downstream of Fawn's Leap. Fenn has taken some liberties with this view. The spot is beautiful and rugged, but not as rugged as this illustration indicates.
The site of the former Rip Van Winkle House - a stop for stage coaches on the way to the Catskill Mountain House - is accurately depicted in the illustration on the right. The spot can still be found on the Mountain Turnpike, now a trail maintained by the State of New York. Although both buildings are gone, a foot bridge is still here, and the site is very much the same as illustrated by Fenn. A detail of this illustration shows the coach.
