Sunset Rock - South Mountain

19th Century Illustration of Sunset Rock The Trail along the North Rim of Kaaterskill Clove offers one of the highest concentrations of magnificent views in the Catskills.  The most frequently mentioned of these in the 19th Century was Sunset Rock.
Modern hikers may find this surprising since the outlook that is marked "Sunset Rock" today, although impressive, is surpassed by at least two other views along the trail.
It is likely that today's Inspiration Point is the original Sunset Rock - comparison of photos and engravings of Sunset rock seem to suggest this.  That leaves us with the problem of finding the original Inspiration Point somewhere to the east of the current one.
It really matters little.  The trail along the rim of Kaaterskill Clove provides one of the best and easiest walks in the Catskills.  Real Catskill Buffs may want to investigate the possible renaming of Sunset Rock.  But if you live in or visit the Northern Catskills, this is a walk not to be missed.
Do be careful since you will be walking a trail that comes close to very high ledges and one that is particularly dangerous in icy weather.
