North and South Lakes, now joined and part of North Lake state
campground in Haines Falls were two separate lakes in the days of the Catskill
Mountain House and Hotel Kaaterskill. Thomas Cole's painting "Lake with
Dead Trees" depicts North Lake. South Lake was lower and larger and the
main recreational lake for the Mountain House.
