Mountain Top Historical Society -- Hikes 1998

April 25     Diamond Notch to Diamond Notch Falls. We will follow Hollow Tree Brook with its many miniature waterfalls followed by views of Southern Catskills. After a lunch at Diamond Notch Falls, we will return to the starting point. Vertical Rise 800 ft.: Distance 4.6 miles. Meet Junction 214 and 23A 9:00 AM Return 3:30 Moderate.

May 16     Slide Cornell and Witenberg. Vigorous Hike in the hopefully cooler days of our hiking season. Spectacular views at several stops along the way. Vertical Rise 2500 ft. distance 8 miles. Meet intersection of Rt. 28 and 47 in Big Indian. 8:30 AM. return 6:00 PM. Difficult.

May 30     Luncheon at Mohonk Mountain House. OurWorking up an appetite rock scramble Mohonk members have fallen in love with this truly unique resort. This will be our seventh visit. We will hike in the morning, enjoy Mohonk's famous luncheon Buffet, and take another short walk in the afternoon. Contact us for information on cost and payment dates for the luncheon at the Mountain House.

June 20     North Point. Scutt Road to North Lake and on to North Point. Our quest for mountain laurel in bloom amid the classic scenery of the Kaaterskill Region. Vertical Rise 1000 ft. Distance 7 miles Meet Haines Falls Library 9:00 AM. return 5:00 P.M. Moderate to difficult .

July 11     Twin Mountain A steep climb to some of the best views in the Catskills. Vertical Rise 1400 ft. distance 5 1/2 miles. Meet St. Francis de Sales church parking lot Rt. 16 near Elka Park 9:00 AM. return 3:30 P.M. Moderate to difficult..

July 25 Huckleberry Point Relatively flat walk leading to views of the Hudson Valley and Platt Clove.. Meet St. Francis de Sales church parking lot Rt. 16 near Elka Park 9:00 AM. return 3:30 P.M. Easy.

August 8     Blackhead and Acra Point Trail climbs one of the steepest slopes in the Catskills. Varied views of the Hudson Valley, East Jewett Valley and Big Hollow Valley. The Vertical Rise 1600 ft. distance 7.5 miles. Meet Maplecrest Post Office 9:00 AM. return 5:00 PM. Difficult

August 29     Not a hike Join us at the annual open house at U&D Railroad Station home in Haines Falls. 3:00 to 6:00. Hiking the U&D tracks past the Haines Falls Station - Now our headquarters.

Sept. 12     Bonticou Crag and the region around. Beautiful views to the west of the Shawangunks. Vertical Rise 750 ft. Distance: 6 miles Meet Thruway exit 18 New Paltz. 8:30 AM return 5:00 PM. Moderate with an optional rock scramble

October 10     Windham High Peak. Beautiful views of Hudson Valley. We will return by way of Burnt Knob with its views of the Big Hollow Valley. Vertical rise: 2000 ft. Distance: 7 miles. Meet Parking Area Rt. 23 East Windham 9:00 AM. return 5:00 PM Difficult.
