Mission Statement

The Mountain Top Historical Society of Greene County was founded in 1973, granted a Permanent Charter as an historical organization by the State of New York, and in 1974 accorded 501(c)(3) tax exempt status by the Federal Internal Revenue Service (23-7260145)

It is the mission of The Society to increase and disseminate knowledge of and interest in that portion of the Catskill Mountains generally referred to as the "Mountain Top" through the study of its literature, history, culture, folklore, and legends by means of such programs and activities as the Society shall establish. Toward the fulfillment of this mission, The Society shall seek...

• To discover, procure, preserve, and display such personal property, documents, books, historical and contemporary materials as may relate to the Mountain Top;
• To encourage, sponsor, and support the establishment of courses, workshops, and conferences encompassing the history and traditions of the Mountain Top in local schools, in institutions of higher learning, and where otherwise appropriate;
• To acquaint its membership, students, and the general public with historical sites, buildings, and places of special interest on the Mountain Top through walking tours and other group activities;
• To increase knowledge and appreciation of the Mountain Top through the publication of a newsletter, articles, monographs, and books or otherwise reproduced textual or graphic material; and
• To sponsor any other appropriate events, programs, and activities that will strengthen The Society in the advancement of its stated purposes.
